05.16.02 firmware unlock help

ok i have a new iphone 3gs and i want to unlock it so i can use 3rd party apps and customize my phone any way i want to .
my firmware is 05.16.02 what is the best way to hack this phone ?

there is no software unlock for that baseband so you would have to rely on unlock solutions such as gevey sim or if you can use the carrier its locked to?

un locked is the wrong term i want to jail break it for 3rd party apps can i down grade the firmware ?

You can only downgrade a firmware if you ever save that firmware shsh.

If your concern is not about unlocking, "meaning that you don't need to preserve or upgrade your baseband in order to unlock your device" then use redsnow to jailbreak your iOS. You can also use snowbreeze as an alternative if you are using a windows computer or pawnage tool if you are using a Mac.

Using redsnow to upgrade the baseband? I've also read it many times but I've never tried it my self. You can try it though. If it fails then use snowbreeze.

if i use the ipad base band it will upgrade to 05.16.02 i just dont want to brick this thing im hoping it will work i got 19 min left on the download

The unlockable iPad baseband is 06.15.00 not 05.16.02

no problem with your firmware version, you can jailbreak it and upgrade to the iPad baseband then unlock the iOS using ultranow from cydia.

jail broke it using the ipad baseband and redsnow and i have cydia now looks like it all works fine now i just need to learn how to use cydia lol
