12,432 e-mails but none in inbox

When I open my iPhone 5 the "mail" icon tells me I have 12,432 e-mails waiting in my inbox. But, when accessed, all of my inboxes are empty. Even the "mailboxes" directory shows this amount but none are there. When new e-mails arrive, I delete after reading but the 12,432 numerals stay. Weird. Any ideas? Thanks.
