3gs Not Connecting to Computer/ iTunes

I have a 3GS which in no longer used as a phone. I would like to get all of the photos off of it and upload to my computer and add music to it to use like an iPod.
When I connect it to my computer (Windows 7) it does go into charge mode but iTunes does not open and when I click on My Computer to try to get the pictures the iPhone is not showing. It seems like the computer and iTunes is not recognizing it.
I have updated the phone to the most recent software.
Any ideas how I can get it to connect so I can get my pictures and add music?

Apple has quite a few suggestions what to do if your device isn't recognized by iTunes. Here's the link to their instructions:

Check you computer to iphone cable, try plugging I to a different computer port. From your computer open My Computer. Look for either the listing of your iPhone or the icon for the iPhone. Right clck on it and then left click on import your photos. You do not go thru itunes for any of this.

You should be able to view and download all your photos by going into Computer, the find your iPhone in the list, then open the sub folders. There you should find your photos. Hope this helps.
