Your e-mails and messages are about to get much more colourful with the announcement from the Unicode Consortium that it will be releasing 72 new emoji as part of Unicode 9.0 on June 21.
AppleInsider writes that the new emoji, which have been rendered “Apple Style” by Emojipedia, include the likes of Mother Christmas, Man in Tuxedo, and even an arm taking a selfie, with the phone that the arm is holding displaying the new Facepalm emoji.
But it’s not all just fun and games when it comes to Unicode 9.0, as it will also include 19 symbols for use in Japanese TV broadcasts; modern language scripts such as Adlam, Osage, and Newa; and historic scripts such as Bhaiksuki, Marchen, and Tangut, as well as other fixes and tweaks.
It’s expected that the Unicode Standard version 9.0 specification will be released on June 21, and Apple will most likely incorporate the new additions to the emoji library into its software as soon as possible. Last year it included new emojis featured in Unicode 8.0 with the first iOS 9 update in October.
