Boy Genius Report has got its hands on an internal memo to AppleCare staff that tells them how to deal with calls about the antenna and poor reception issue. The memo instructs AppleCare staff to emphasise the fact that the iPhone 4's overall antenna performance is better than that of the iPhone 3GS, to point out to the customer that holding any mobile phone in a certain way can cause reception issues, and to tell the caller that the use of a rubber or plastic bumper may improve wireless performance. The memo ends with a very adamant:
We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers DONT promise a free bumper to customers.
As BGR says, one of the most interesting things about the memo is the fact that there is no mention whatsoever of the rumoured software fault and possible software update, which would imply that the problem is indeed purely a hardware issue.
