Apple has announced that its app store in China now accepts payments made using China's UnionPay credit and debit cards. This is quite big news if we take into account that China UnionPay is a bankcard network that has issued more than 4.5 billion cards in China. Currently, China has an estimated 100 million iPhone users and is regarded by many as Apple’s most important growth market.
Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said the following in a statement:
"The ability to buy apps and make purchases using UnionPay cards has been one of the most requested features from our customers in China. China is already our second largest market for app downloads, and now we’re providing users with an incredibly convenient way to purchase their favorite apps with just one tap"
China UnionPay is also the only interbank network in mainland China to link all ATMs. So, from now on, app Store customers in China can now link their UnionPay debit or credit cards to their Apple IDs for purchases.
