AppleInsider reports today on the news that Apple and Samsung are about to overtake Nokia to become the second largest smartphone maker in the world, just behind Samsung which will now be number one. Nokia has been top of the global smartphone market tree since 1996, but this quarter, according to a new note from Japanese analysts Nomura, it will be overtaken for the first time in 15 years by two other companies, Samsung and Apple, falling back to third place. And thats not all the bad news for Nokia, as Nomura also says that Koreas HTC is also set to continue to surge forward, almost equalling Nokias sales by 2012 and eventually pushing the Finnish company into fourth place.
The one piece of somewhat positive news for Nokia is that it is still riding high as the worlds top cell phone maker, above nearest rival Samsung, and with no Apple products competing in this area of course. AppleInsider also notes that this January Apple became the biggest global phone seller in terms of revenue, hitting $10.47 billion, beating Nokias figure of $9.7 billion.
