MacRumors reports today on new figures from Asymco’s Horace Dediu on operating profits for the top eight mobile phone vendors for the first quarter of 2012. According to Dediu’s figures, Apple and Samsung together now have 99% of the profits, with Apple alone having 73%, representing a slight drop from 75% in the last quarter of 2011. Samsung saw a steep rise in its share, from 16% in the previous quarter to 26% in the first quarter of 2012. Samsung’s impressive rise was at the expense of the likes of RIM, LG, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia, none of whom could manage to turn a profit in the quarter, with only HTC proving able to squeeze out a tiny profit of 1% of total industry profits. MacRumors notes that in the past two years, the profits taken by the top eight vendors have soared from $5.3 billion to $14.4 billion.

Hmm. I'd read Android surpassed Apple in market share over a year ago. Wonder when that trend changed again??

Android does have more physical market share than iOS. But Android phone makers for the most part aren't profitable which is what this article is about. In fact HTC is losing money daily now. Motorola mobile is going to fail if Google doesn't hurry up and finish the purchase of it. Samsung is the only Android device maker making any kind of profit at present. Otherwise as far as device makers go, Apple is king of the hill and will maintain the position for at least the next 18 months.
