If you have ever played a video game on a Sony Playstation, Microsoft Xbox, or Nintendo Wii console, then you are already familiar with the concept of haptic feedback. Haptic feedback on a console controller is basically a vibrating sensor key underneath the gaming buttons. It is meant to offer users a more visceral and realistic feel to their devices and give them signals beyond just what they see and hear from the game.
According to a patent filed by Apple, this is potentially a feature we might see in a future iPhone. Specifically, Apple filed a patent on the 28th of June, 2011 that is meant to make the touch-screen QWERTY keyboard on an iPhone feel like a physical keyboard by offering this haptic feedback. It will accomplish this with vibrating sensors underneath the display.
As far as we know this technology will take some time before it actually comes to market. More than likely flexible plastic displays will need to be more ubiquitous before this haptic feedback tech can make it into our next iPhone. Still, it's intriguing to see that Apple is still continuing to push their innovative ideas no matter how far in the future it might take to implement them.
