It may have only been available since September, but according to analytics firm SimilarTech, via MacRumors, online Apple Pay already has the fifth largest share of the online payment market as far as the top 10,000 websites are concerned.
SimilarTech’s figures show that Apple Pay has 0.25% of the top 10,000 websites, and is supported on a total of 1,035 websites since it was launched in September via iOS 10 and macOS Sierra.
This means that Apple is already ahead of rival services such as Amazon Payments and Google, but still has a long way to go to compete with the industry leader, PayPal, which has both the number 1 and number 2 slots with its standard PayPal service at number 1 and PayPal Subscribe at number 2 with 2.36% and 0.98% respectively.
SimilarTech marketing director Daniel Buchuk said that Apple Pay has had a “meteoric rise,” especially when considering the challenges of getting popular websites to adopt a new payment platform, and in comparison with the number of years competitors such as PayPal have had to establish their brand.
