In what seemed to be the longest unannounced period of unavailability, the Apple Developer Center has been taken down for 48 hours, making it impossible for devs to work on their iPhone and iPad apps and to access the new SDK for iOS 7 beta. The reason behind this unexpected event? Apparently, the website has been hacked and in the process, names, physical mailing addresses and email accounts might have been breached.
The website has been taken down since Thursday, to supposedly perform maintenance procedures, but soon, the real truth began being speculated around the web. So, Apple issued a statement revealing the actual reason the website was down:
Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed; however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed.
Apple went on to state that in order to prevent such breaches to ever happen again the entire security system will be subject to an overhaul which involves re-building the entire database. According to the statement, the Apple team is actively working towards this direction and the website should be up and running soon enough.
Also, the email notes that most of the information stored on the website is encrypted, so hopefully no sensitive information has leaked and developers can be at ease. At this moment, the website is back online.
