It might be a slow news day today, but MacRumors has a gem of a story, which originated on German sites Flos Weblog and iFun.de, who both spotted an unusual iOS app from Apple that suddenly appeared in the App Store on December 31. Called GameStore [App Store], the app is most likely a test app. It offers several tracks from racing games as in-app purchases, including Nitrous and Fuji Speedway. According to MacRumors, the in-app purchases will go through and your account will be charged when you make them, but they wont actually be of any use to you as there is no actual game on offer to go with them! As to how or why the app found its way into the App Store, MacRumors notes that the app has an original posting date of June 9, 2009, which was actually when Apple was holding its yearly Worldwide Developers Conference just prior to launching iPhone OS 3.0, which also saw the launch of in-app purchases, so maybe this internal Apple GameStore app got somehow stuck in the system and republished in the App Store last weekend. We may never know! Its certainly a head-scratcher.
The app is, at the time of writing, still up on the app story, so click on the following link if you want to check it out! App Store - GameStore
