AppleInsider reports that new figures from Counterpoint Research indicate that by the end of the fourth quarter of 2012, the iPhone had a 16% share of the Japanese mobile phone market, giving it an annual share of 15%, and taking into account all types of mobile phones in Japan, including feature phones and smartphones. This placed Apple ahead of rivals such as Sharp and Fujitsu in Japan for the first time, with both of those companies having a 14% market share. What makes this feat even more impressive for Apple is the fact that Sharp had been the number one mobile phone manufacturer in Japan for the past six years running. And lets not forget, this is one of the most technologically advanced nations on earth as well! The Next Web, which initially reported on the story, said that one of the major reasons for Apples success in Japan has been the promotional push provided by Japanese carriers, Softbank and KDDI.
