It’s looking more and more likely that Apple is indeed intending to ditch the 3.5mm jack, with 9to5 Mac reporting that Apple is currently working on creating new wireless Bluetooth earphones ready for the iPhone 7 launch. Apparently the sources say that the earphones don’t even have a cable connecting left and right ear pieces.
9to5 Mac’s sources report that the new earphones are very similar to the Motorola Hint headset pictured at the top of this post, and also Bragi’s Dash headphone that were launched at CES this week.
While due for release at the same time as the iPhone 7, it’s not expected that the headphones will be bundled with the iPhone, but will in fact be a premium alternative for the standard EarPods that will be bundled with the phone. As has been widely reported, these EarPods will only be able to connect to the phone via the Lightning connector or over Bluetooth due to the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack.
