Automatic divert to answerphone

hi

ignorant newbe here in first stages of love with iphone4.

phone was fine but now is diverting automatically to answerphone and not ringing at all - cannot for the life of me figure out where to turn it off.

also has gone totally silent though settings indicate normal volume on - though i see from another thread that i need to keep switch above volume forward - what does the switch do please?

That switches from vibrate to ringer.
