Backup to iCloud

When I bring up iTunes, click on my iPhone 6+ and then Summary, one of the apparent choices is backing up to the iCloud. But the last backup shown, to the iCloud, was 9/4. I tried to back up manually, but that evidently backs up only to my computer.

There is clearly something I don't understand about backing up to the iCloud. Where am I misunderstanding or going wrong?

You have to backup to iCloud from the iPhone itself, not through iTunes. Go to Settings>ICloud>Backup and turn it on. You can set it to backup on a schedule or manually.
