Baseband 04.11.08 unlock possible

I have a friend that upgraded his iphone 4 to the 5.0.1 ios without preserving his baseband or saving shshblob. Now the phone won't get any service on his network. Is there anyway at all to unlock the phone or should he give it up as a lost cause?
