I have a 3Gs running 4.1 and Safari no longer loads properly, nor gmail, nor the app for Gmail. I think I ought to upgrade. Can I do so?

My iPhone is both unlocked (US bought) and jailbroken. The firmware is 06.15

If so, what are the steps for so doing?

Thanks so much in advance!

Since you're using the 6.15.00 iPad baseband for unlocking purposes... ONLY use a custom IPSW (Firmware File) when updating. How to do that..... download the stock 5.1.1 IPSW here... http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS5.1.1/041-4347.20120427.o2yov/iPhone2,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw and save it somewhere on your Desktop. Then download redsn0w from here.. Dev-Team Blog. There's an option for creating a "Custom IPSW" and be sure that the "Preserve Baseband" option is selected. Also save that IPSW file to your desktop. Once redsn0w is finished working it's magic on the custom IPSW... you'll use iTunes to do a manual update to the Custom 5.1.1 IPSW redsn0w created. That differes on whether you're using a PC or a Mac...... then you'll Jailbreak w/ the same redsn0w program. If you're using a PC.. ALWAY ALWAYS right click on the redsn0w.exe and choose "Run as Administrator."

You'll run the Custom IPSW option via redsn0w... and you'll select the stock 5.1.1 IPSW during that selection process. redsn0w will use the stock IPSW to create the custom IPSW. Be sure that the baseband preservation option is selected if not already. Are you using a PC or Mac?

I am using a Mac. After this then I do a manual install of iTunes? I didn't know that this was possible.

I am in Redsn0w and Idon't see the option for creating the custom IPSW. There are five choices:

install cydia
install custom bundle
add activation ticket
downgrade from ipad baseband
deactivate

I tried the second, to install custom bundle but when i tried to local the ipsw file, it shows up only in grey so I cannot select it.

There's an "Extras" menu you need to slect in redsn0w. As far as the manual update in iTunes w/ a Mac... I believe it's Command+Click on the restore button... and you select the custom IPSW you created to restore to.

Thanks. One confusing there here...It is asking me for the week of my iphone 3gs production where they use week 45 as the cut off between newer models. But mine was produced in 2011 and was produced in week 39. So I am perplexed as to what to answer since does the year as well matter? (They use 2009 in the example.)

Thanks again.

It's not an issue if your 3GS is already using the 6.15.00 iPad baseband... that's what they're asking for. 3GS' manufactured after a certain point in 2011 are NOT compatible w/ the 6.15.00 BB. You're obviously good to go... since it's already on 6.15.

So I just intall Redsn0w then without the special installation? And should my phone be off for the installation?

Thanks again!

No no... you still need to create the Custom IPSW w/ the baseband preservation option. That's what keeps the 6.15 BB in place and doesn't update it to the latest 3GS bb.

Just to clarify, I have a iPhone 3GS, this is good software for the iPhone and not just the iPad, right? So since my phone serial number is QR139

Do I click yes or no? I am still confused since this is past he 2009 date but is earlier than 45 weeks in 2011.

Thanks

I clicked on yes and it created a custom IPSW "no__bb_iphone2,1_-1.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw"

And the line after says: NOTE: You must enter "Pwned DFU" mode to use this.

So what does this mean? Thanks again.

Using redsn0w once again... under "Extras"... there's a "Pwned DFU" mode button. Run that before the Command+Click Restore in iTunes.
