I know I've asked about IMessage but it costs. Is there a free app that allows me to send free texts to the UK?

iMessages doesn't cost anything if its Apple ID to Apple ID. If its racking up a bill, then either you or the recipient a doing something wrong or not logged in. All texting apps requires a phone plan or a balance. Messenger apps are free assuming both users are using the same app

Viber it's avabile in AppStore free but u can only text other if they have it installed in to their smartphone
I use Eir Text but ur network has to allowed u to use it I mean if they have a plan to send webtext
