AppleInsider reports that BMW has posted a YouTube video announcing that it will be adding support for iPod Out in its BMWs and Minis from next year. The feature, which is available in all devices running iOS 4, lets the device present a full control panel on an external display in a vehicle.
As the video shows, unlike current iPod vehicle integration systems, the new iPod Out enables much more comprehensive features to be included in the vehicle display, such as Genius Mixes, and uses an interface that will be familiar to all Apple users. The display will be part of the new BMW automotive experience, which also features a navigation dial and buttons that have been positioned closer to the drivers right hand.
According to BMW, engineers at its Palo Alto technology center have been working on using the system for the past three years, in conjunction with German engineers in BMWs Munich Research and Innovation Centre.
