Apparently, Apples long term feud with arch enemy Samsung hasnt damaged other companies much. Just this week, Brazilian electronics company IGB Electronica SA announced that it plans to release a host of Android smartphones which are going to be launched under the banner iPHONE. The company claims that it has registered the name and applied to register the trademark back in 2000.
We cant help but wonder if this is a wise choice on behalf of the IGB board. Apple is known to fiercely go after companies that attempt to try and borrow from its patented ideas. Nevertheless, the fact that they registered the name earlier, should help the case of the Brazilian group. Even so, we dont see Apple taking a time out on this one. Not many details are known about the patent, except for the fact that it only applies within the Brazilian border.
The iPhone is indeed available for sale in this country currently but due to increased tax levels it can cost up to three times more compared to the United States. For example, a Brazilian would have to pay a total of $1,830 USD to get his/her hands on an iPhone 4S. The first smartphone to be released under the IPHONE banner will be the Neo One and will cost around 600 reals. This is a meager price, four times lower compared to an entry-level iPhone 5, reports Macworld Brasil. The device will come sporting the Gingerbread 2.3 operating system, a touchscreen, 3G connectivity and a dual-SIM function.
