Can I unlock 3gs, no original sim, no idea of firmware?

I have just been given an iphone 3gs from the uk. It is locked to O2 network. I have no O2 sim as I live abroad and cannot access the phone to find out firmware version. Just get itunes message sim card does not appear to be supported using my sim from Thailand.

Is there a safe way to unlock the phone not knowng any information?

iPhone unlocking doesn't rely on the Firmware version running... only what Baseband the phone is on. In order to determine whether or not this phone is on an unlockable Baseband there needs to be access to the phone "Settings." Possibly you could acquire an O2 Sim card online just to see what baseband you have.
