Smartphone manufacturers have finally realized that offering cheaper handsets is not a solution to beat Apple’s iPhones. It appears that handset makers have changed their strategy and decided to bring high-performance smartphones to counter Apple’s offer. Google’s Nexus 4G is one of these non-iOS smartphones that are challenging iPhone’s throne. Nexus 4G is expected to hit the stores sometime in November 2011.

Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone will reportedly host a dual-core processor under its hood, probably the A5 processor and 1GB of RAM. Some analysts suggest that iPhone 5 could be compatible with 4G LTE networks, but this is highly unlikely. Other possible features include a 4-inch display, an upgraded 8MP main camera with the flash unit placed at the other side of the phone so as to reduce the red-eye effect.

On the other hand, Google’s Nexus 4G is expected to integrate a 1.2 or 1.5 GHz processor, maybe a OMAP 4460 processor from Texas Instruments or a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The smartphone will probably bring 1GB of RAM and a 4-inch display with a 720p resolution. Nexus 4G will definitely offer LTE support since it bears the 4G moniker in its name.
The operating system is actually the heart of a smartphone and Apple has already revealed the new improvements in its iOS 5 which will probably power the iPhone 5. As for Nexus 4G, it will most likely run Android 4.0 „Ice Cream Sandwich”, an OS that is expected to equal Apple’s iOS in terms of performances.

Nexus 4G appears to be a strong competitor for the iPhone but we will have to wait till fall to see what the exact specs are for both smartphones. Nexus 4G may be an iPhone 5 killer, but so may be Motorola’s Photon 4G and Droid Bionic.

There is only one winner in all this battle of smartphones – the consumer. While Apple, Motorola, Google and all the others are trying to develop faster and better gadgets, consumers may rest assured that they will have a great array of smartphones to choose from and prices will continue to drop thanks to fierce competition.
