Charging Through USB

Can there be any harm done by charging the 4S through my laptp USB? Meaning, having the correct charge rate, etc.

The "Important Product Information Guide" that came with the phone has text the size that only an ant could read. I can make out some info that the USB must be iPhone approved or something. My laptop is 4 years old and not an Apple product.

I'm afraid that when I connect to upload photo's etc that I am going to damage my "great" battery ;o)

No damage at all allowing the USB to charge.
One could argue that it could be better than the rapid wall charger since the battery would not get as hot during recharge.
As you know, the downside is it takes much longer. That may or may not be a concern if you're at your computer most of the day.

No, no harm. I think they're talking about the cable being the Apple cable.
