Just curious, just got a new car that has a USB port I don't have an extra car charger for this car yet so wondering if I can just plug the USB cable from the phone ( the one that plugs into the home charger) into the USB in the car would it charge ?

That's what the connector is there for so it should work without any problems for your iPhone. It may not supply enough power to properly charge an iPad, though.
