Check spelling without auto-correction

I use an iPhone 3g (not 3gs). If I go to Settings > General > Keyboard, I can toggle auto-correction on or off, but if I choose 'Off', 'check spelling' is greyed out. Is there any way I can check spelling without having auto-correction on as well?

That's not possible, sorry! iOS 4x doesn't allow using Check Spelling without Auto-Correction. It's possible from iOS 5 onwards.
