Contacts deleted off phone after iCloud back up?

Backed up contacts in iCloud last night on old phone and now contacts list on phone is empty..why??

Are you browsing your contacts on your device or iCloud? There is a difference

I backed them up from iPhone to iCloud and when I went to look something up on phone they were gone

Try a restore from backup. Can't see that backing up should remove stuff from your phone. Not good at all.

When I browse my contacts, I have the option of using my iCloud contacts or the ones stored on my phone. There are none on my phone. They are all on iCloud

Enable iCloud oh the phone, connect iPhone with iTunes, make sure that backup is always done with iCloud. Sync..... and thats it.
BTW, I prefer iDrive Lite for saving my contacts.
