9to5 Mac today reports on a note to clients from Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore, which says that Apple is planning to launch two new iPhones this September, with one, the iPhone 4S, being a cheaper, contract-free (pre-paid), unlocked phone, and the other, the iPhone 5, being a much higher spec model, a superphone, in fact. The report quotes Whitmore as saying that with Nokia and RIM apparently struggling, it would make perfect sense for Apple to come out with a mid-priced phone for around $300-$500, thus greatly increasing its market share. However, as 9to5 Mac points out, there is a slight problem with this theory, in that $349 is not exactly cheap, especially when compared to Android phones such as the $150 Huawei Ascend. Even so, there could still be substance behind Whitmores theory, as rumours have been circulating for months that Apple has been working on a cheaper iPhone, so this news is far from out of the blue.
