If you open up the Mail.app, tap the top left until you get back to a screen with the header "Mailboxes" with a list of Inboxes, then underneath a list of Accounts. Tap on the account that you want to create the new box for. Tap Edit on the top right and you should have New Mailbox. Tap it, create a name for the box, and voila.
It depends on which email service you're using. This will work for some while not so for others. You should, however, be able to create the new mailbox on a browser, and it should transition onto your device.

Are we talking about adding folders to an email account? You can do that with Gmail and others, but not with Comcast and other accounts. If it's important to have the additional folders, I would switch to another email service.

I think Verizon's email is webmail. You may have to access your Verizon email account on a computer to add folders. But check how I do it with Gmail.
1. Tap edit in top right corner.
2. Tap New Mailbox in bottom right corner.
3. Enter a name for the folder.
4. Tap Save in top right corner.
That's how most are done. Some email accounts such as Comcast don't work on phones for creating folders. I don't know about Verizon.

You could create a gmail email account and use that.
