Cydia apps not working

I am farly new to jailbreaking but I was able to run the process and jailbreak my phone. I downloaded veency and was able to use VNC veiwer and bring my phone screen on to my computer screen. well I decided to start to modify mt phone my downloaded more apps. I downloaded a simple emblem changer and when I go to winterboard, I see the app there, then I enabled it and it didnt work. then i downloaded a different keyboard and when I go to keyboards I cant find it to enable it. I am not sure what I am doing wrong also I am not sure what winterboard or summerboard or how to get these apps to work.

After enabling things via Winterboard... you have to respring your iDevice.
