Does imessage work internationally?

Guys. If I am in south Africa for example. And I have ios 5 and my girlfriend has ios 5 and she is in America and she sends me a message through iMessage will it work?

Haha. It gives me problems though. One minute it works the other I am sending text messages.

For what is worth -

Last year, my wife and I drove to Montreal. I called VZW before we departed. The CS agent confirmed that, for an extra charge, I could call and data would only work via wifi. Interestingly, she told me that I could text as much as I wanted and not incur any extra charges. She was correct!

If both of you have Skype it is even better. When I am travelling, I always use the WIFI at the airport or my Airport Express in the hotel room if there is internet connection to ring my boys and relatives back home for free.
