Does iphone 4 gps need network connection?

Was wondering if any gps apps work outside the mobile network areas(when I go offroad, camping etc)

I'm pretty sure, it will work.
But not sure, if it is capable to travel with as the ''battery'' could run out easily.
I'm also not sure, if it will work without signal. It's worth a try, maybe you could test it out on a drive from your home to your supermarket. If you know what way to use, if you get lost.
Just bring a normal GPS/Navigation with you such as the TomTom so you don't get lost.
P.s If you don't want the iPhone battery to run out, use a car charger.
