Downgrade from ios 4.3.1 to 3.1.3

I'm running ios 4.3.1 on my iPhone 3G and want to return it to the speedier 3.1.3. Unfortunately, after running through the installation, towards the end I get an error message and am not allowed to complete the installation. Any thoughts, suggestions, anyone?
