I found easiest solution for this. Go into your email accounts and delete them. Turn the phone off for one minute then fire back up. Go back into email setting and re-add accounts. I had this problem did that and touch wood been fine ever since.

iHolo... did you get this problem after you upgraded to a newer iOS version, or did it just suddenly appear?

This happened all of a sudden. Did not upgrade anything. My wife has the same issue with her gmail on her iphone. Tried restarting and everything. Still getting the error.

No happened all of a sudden I phoned apple care and they went around all the houses but the fix for it. Eventually I deleted and did a reinstalled and seemed to work. Although one mail server still does not allow me to reply. So I use a different mail server to reply and it works. Orange is the mail server that does not allow the reply and I think it has something to do with the out going port. But as long as the others allow it all is good. Kind of (laughs out loud)

Interesting stuff. I've got 2 Hotmail accounts and one GMail account on my iPhones. When I first got the devices, I was uncertain just how to enter the accounts onto the phone. Some said to use Exchange and some others said to enter the accounts manually, using specific server data. I'm not certain what I did, but I think my GMail account was entered using Exchange (whatever THAT is??!!) and I haven't had a problem with it at all. Every now and then I get a message when I turn the iPhone on that my Exchange password is wrong, but I just disregard that and press on. My Hotmail accounts are simply perfect all the time, and I don't think I used Exchange (again, whatever THAT is?!) when I configured them.

I'm curious what will eventually resolve your problem.
Note to self: What is an "orange" server?

Orange is my email account. It's orangehome.co.uk. I have to use other in the set up as it won't find the server unlike hotmail or btinternet. I think this has something to do with orange and their servers. So like I said I use other to set it up and half way through manually configure it. This is where the outgoing port comes in. It's set to 110 but I think it maybe or should be 80 as the 110 port is authenticated. That's why I can't reply. If I set it to 80 it doesn't work full stop. I have tried with orange to sort this out but nothing has worked so far.

Yes, I see what you mean now, iHolo... I've had to manually configure some non-standard email accounts on my PCs years ago, and that can be very tricky. Must be trickier on an iPhone.
Sorry, but I'm no help to you. Good luck!

No worries it's all sorted out. 😄
