Emails from my phone dating back to 2010

Recently changed from Blackberry torch to IPhone 5 with O2 and have over 8000 emails unread dating back to 2010. All emails on my computer have been deleted long ago so where are they coming from and how do I get rid of them easily. At the moment I am deleting them manually and as soon as I get rid of 50 another 50 take their place. The O2 store did not know where they were coming from and just said keep deleting them manually but it will take for ever. Please someone tell me what has happened.

Log onto your email account and delete/archive them all there. Otherwise, if your account is a Gmail or Google-powered email account, you can use the Mailbox app from the AppStore to archive everything at once.
