Emoji keyboard ?

The girlfriend and i normally use whatsapp to send text messages to each other.The smilie things show up on both our phones how they're are sent ie a snowman ( her phone is a BB 9105 ) but if i send her a normal sms and use the emoji keyboard she just recieves a black square and if she sends say a

i recieve it like : ) .Is this normal and if not how do i correct it?,i have tried deleting the keyboard turning off my phone and then adding it again

Generally, unless you use Unicode, different devices cannot read the other's emojis. If you are not sending Apple's emojis to another Apple device - it won't be able to read them properly (and vice versa). More than likely, that is what is happening here.

Ok thank you Marilyn i guessed it would be something like that. Just a quick question tho,why does whatsapp use the same emoji keyboard as the one Apple uses for normal sms,or is that because when you download whatsapp it's for the iphone ?
