How do I fix my iphone 3GS it's stuck in recovery mode and when I connect to iTunes I get the message error-1 at the end,the phone had been jail broken so will I get a new phone if I can't fix it and send it bk to O2 it is insured

All i no is you wont be able to send it back because its been hacked/jailbroken, you tried to reset your phone, Settings > General > Reset (at the bottom), dont worry no data like music, apps and videos wont go missing, it will just reset setting to default.
