Following a trend started by other US agencies, The National Transportation Safety Board has become the latest in the series to renounce the services of Research in Motion and its BlackBerry, as to jump into the iPhone band wagon. Other larger US offices like the Defense Department, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Transportation Security Administration have already successfully completed the transition.
In the filling that justified the switch, the NTSB stated that the BlackBerry devices "have been failing both at inopportune times and at an unacceptable rate." Because the department is in charge of offering immediate support in case of plane crashes or other disasters involving means of transportation the NTSB requires effective, reliable and stable communication capabilities to carry out its primary investigative mission and to ensure employee safety in remote locations.
The NTSB might have an ulterior motive for purchasing the iPhones. It has already installed iPads in its offices, so having the same operating system working across all devices might be beneficial thing, money wise as much as time wise.
"The NTSB is a small organization with limited resources. As such, it needs to standardize on a minimum number of operating platforms."
This is very unsettling news for Research in Motion who is working avidly on BlackBerry 10. And they surely need it. Northern Securities analyst, Sarneet Kanade commented on the situation:
"Once customers start coming out in the open and saying theyre dissatisfied with the product, its very, very difficult" to increase business. Its very difficult for your brand to be relevant when youre losing your base itself."
