Gmail tones and pushing

I am having a weird issue with my 4S (first iphone). I use gmail and if I use the stock mail app with my gmail account it does not seem to push my emails, I have to open it manually and hit refresh. In settings, it is set to push. The second issue is changing the alert, which I can do with the stock mail app and it works fine. However, if I download gmail app, my mail pushes instantly (yeah), but it has a very low alert tone that I cannot change and it overrides the stock mail app.

Why don't I get mail in stock app till I open it, and why can't I change the alert tone when I use the gmail app?
