Good message app

I will be buying a new iPhone Plus after using an Android phone for many years. I like to customize and was wondering if there are message apps where you can set it so you see pictures of the people in the conversation. Here is a screen shot of what I can now see on my Android phone. I would like something similar.

You won't be able to change default text messaging apps. You could download hangouts and then turn off notifications for the messaging apps. But, in my opinion, iOS excels in messaging over android.

I have an iphone now and agree the stock message app is worth using.
