Back-story. I had my iPhone 4 Sprint replaced today, and I left with it before the genius updated it or set it up. I was in a rush, and she was amazingly nice. It came to this screen when turning it on.

I haven't made a selection yet.

Well. If your with Sprint, select Sprint. If your with Verizon, select Verizon.

I have never seen that before, but I'm sure it's an iPhone 4S that has not been set to a Carrier yet. I'm guessing they do that at the Apple store. But you left before the Genus updated it so it wasn't set.

Pretty self explanatory I think.

sigh.... ok, i guess i'll lead you a bit....

which carrier network has this esn in it's database? is an esn even assigned to the device yet (it's not listed on the paperwork)? maybe it's dynamically added to the handset or the carriers database when i select a carrier? if that's the case, might someone with some actually carrier or ios hacking background be able to use this mechanism to move phones between carriers by actually injecting in to the carrier databases?

i see a lot of implications here. the "duuuhhhhh, select your carrier" comments don't offer much in terms of anything.

If you already realized that there might be implications, why did you even bother starting here? Wouldn't it have been better to tweet this to the iPhone hackers ASAP?

And your original post pretty much looked like a "What do I do now?". So the first response was 100% warranted.
