What extra functions do you want for messaging? BiteSMS is pretty good.

Welcome to the forum. You can get whatsapp from the app store, but then your contacts also need to have it installed on their device before you can SMS. Bitesms is also a very good SMS app, but that is if you already jailbreak your phone.
