Help, Iphone wont update or restore

So here is the story, I recieved a white 16gb Iphone 3gs from a friend. The glass and lcd were completley shattered. i replaced them both and now when i try to turn the phone on, nothing happens. When i plug it into my PC it recgonizes it in DFU mode. Itunes wants to do a "restore and update" when i clicked okay it downloaded the new firmware and and put the phone into recovery mode (white screen) as soon as that happens i get "The Iphone "Iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (21)." ive searched the web for hours and have come up with nothing. Redsnow works on the device but because i dont know what firmware it has on it I cant upload the correct "hacked" firmware to the device.
