Help me understand why I need to update my IOS

Hi
I'm running 4.3.3 right now and I here a lot of people talking about updating and jailbreaking all over again why is that ? I mean if it's running fine why update ? I don't know if I can even update mine since My modem firmware is 06.15.00 off a iPad am I stuck with 4.3.3 ? Is there a way to update my 3GS or am I doomed ?

The 3GS is updatable to ios5.

If you have jailboken your phone, you might want to wait since there is no untethered jailbreak for ios5 on any device. There is a tethered , but that requires you to connect to your of every time your phone is turned off and on.

Yes I'm jailbroken I guess what I'm asking is do I need to update will my iOS become obsolete ?

Your phone will work just fine. However, some apps may end up working different if they are changed to work with ios5. It really is too early to say for sure, but there is norush to update
