help no signal !!!

hi ive jus bought an iphone 4 and for some reason i havent got any signal it just keeps sayin waiting for activation this may take some time? how long does this take and what is it for? many thanks

Are you using a sim the phone is locked to? I should only take a minute or to after plugging it in to iTunes...
