help with iphone 3g jailbreak ios 4.2

i am using an iphone 3g with 3.1.2 ios i was just wondering if i should upgrade to ios 4.2 and should i use the latest version of redsnow to get an untethered jailbreak of ios4.2? i had a few issues jailbreaking last time so just want to make sure this time before i do it thanks!!

just use the latest redsn0w and t should recognise earlier firmwares as well
