Hi and Help! Compass fail on IPhone 5

iPhone 5 Compass app is not working. Not sure if hardware or software issue. Their is no needle movement. In fact I can't tell if there is a needle.

Do you still need to prime the compass by moving the iPhone in a figure of 8 a few times before it starts to work...?
 
Nope. Bula is correct. This is apples support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2767
Seems that any magnetic fields nearby will put your compass off. Even the magnets in your ear phones can affect it.

Thanks for the responses. My current theory is that I have a hardware problem. I have also tried Star Walk that relies on the compass and it is not working properly either. I don't think this is an environmental issue as I don't get any movement on the Compass app at all. It doesn't sound like this is a common problem though.
