How many apps have 1000+ downloads...App Stats

I'm doing some research before I create my app.

Does anyone have some data on how many apps have had at least 1000 hits, and similiar data like this?

I'm trying to see if investing 700 bucks in a particular app is worth it.

I don't believe there is any way to get that data. Apple won't release it and they ask their developers not to release their numbers as well.
