How to Unlock 3G AT&T Model

I am about to get my Dad's old iPhone 3G AT&T model.

Mods at your sister forum sent me here.

The stickies got me in the right direction to jailbreak which I will do when I get the phone. How can I unlock it. I have a T-Mobile sim card that I want to put in and get working with my number. No data, but I don't care, will use wifi when I need it.

A quick question about transferring stuff

I'd feel more comfortable restoring it to factory settings, then setting it up for me and signing into iTunes with my account. Is this any different than deleting his email, erasing his notes, and deleting all of his apps, then signing into the store as myself and downloading my purchased iPhone apps? I would of course only restore to factory settings if I get it while 5.01 is still the latest.

Resetting to factory state is better than just deleting your dad's stuff because you have a clean phone.

You can't go to 5.0.1, the iphone 3G only goes to 4.2.1 (it is the highest, but 3.1.3 is the best and fastest for that phone).
