How to use ringtone as message alert

Hi, I downloaded a ringtone that was a message alert, very short and mentioned 'You have a message gringo' so it is not a ringtne, yet after buying it, it gave me a 'Default as your ringtone' or 'Send to your ringtones' option, nothing else. I went to use it and it is there in my ringtones and I can't use it as a message alert? Unless I have done something wrong or missed something, this is a blatent rip off as you cannot use it as what it was advertised and made as, a message alert, it only give you an option to send it to ringtones.

Is there anyway I can use it as a message alert?

I believe if you are jailbroken you can make it a message alert, otherwise, not to my knowledge.

Right now you cannot set any ringtone as a SMS alert unless jailbroken. iOS 5 will offer this feature finally...

So why advertise as message alerts and then when you buy it find out you cannot use it as a message alert? I am hardly going to set a message alert as my ringtone!

I doubt you found anything that advertised SMS alerts on a unjailbroken. iPhone. It's always been that way,,,ios5 will be the first time that apple has added this feature.
